On the parking lot between two existing hospital buildings, a state-of-the-art medical center of over 56,000 square meters, the Reinier de Graaf Gasthuis, has been built. The shape of the building resembles the esculape (snake with staff), the ancient Greek symbol for medicine. The building has six floors with 475 beds, two hundred of which are single rooms.
Stevens Van Dijck provided project and construction management during the preparation and contract phases. During realization, Stevens Van Dijck was responsible for construction management including construction management.
The departments meander around the central axis, which provides the connection of the various building sections. This created a “connected” hospital. The shape of the model allows quick access to all departments and took advantage of the opportunity to create open spaces. This created a building with plenty of views and natural light. The new hospital building is logistically optimized and has a friendly and welcoming appearance.
The new building includes laboratory spaces with GMP finishes. Drug preparation by the pharmacist takes place in a Hotlab, under specialized conditions. The Hot Lab is related to and therefore located within the Department of Nuclear Medicine. The lab is finished with high-quality wall, floor and ceiling finishes. Furthermore, special provisions have been made for monitoring and recording the pressure regime. The finish and furnishings were chosen specifically for this application.
Implementation began in August 2012. On a very limited construction site, in the middle of a residential area between existing hospital buildings with 24-hour continuous intensive operations, the new building was built. This required extensive and ongoing coordination with all stakeholders involved. Thoughtful site coordination with pre-notified “just-in-time” deliveries were part of the protocol.
In the preparation and realization of the hospital, the so-called “Delft Model” was used, involving parties early in the process in both the design and implementation phases. This resulted in a short project lead time, on time and on budget.
