The building block Hinthamerstraat 72 and 74, two national monumental buildings located at the foot of the Sint-Janskathedraal and De Binnendieze in the Jheronimus Bosch Quarter in the city center of ’s-Hertogenbosch, will undergo significant renovations in the coming years. The reason for this is the merging of two organizations that have long used the buildings independently as neighbors: the public library and the center for art education ‘de Muzerije’.
The renovation includes the renovation, restoration, redevelopment, and reconfiguration of both buildings into a beloved and valued place for all residents of ’s-Hertogenbosch and visitors. The goal is to create a cultural and educational hub where services and activities come together in an inspiring and inviting manner.
Stevens Van Dijck is responsible for the project management and construction supervision of this ambitious project.
Huis73 is the largest cultural organization in ’s-Hertogenbosch and truly welcomes everyone. Here, people can work on self-reliance, participation, integration, and solidarity. The environment will invite both young and old to enjoy literature, art, dance, theater, and music, and challenge them to create something themselves, learn something new, and tell their own stories. It will be a vibrant place, but also offers space to retreat, reflect, study, work, or simply relax. Future-proof and innovative, where old and new come together in a sustainable building.
The renovation focuses on visible programming both inside and outside. This includes new shop windows, a few new window openings, the reuse of existing doors, and the opening of the main gate on Hinthamerstraat. Additionally, the internal connections between the different buildings will be strengthened. The concept of ‘permeability’ will be widely applied within the existing structures, transforming the currently closed building blocks into an accessible part of the city.
The project has various ambitions in the areas of heritage conservation, urban planning, interior design, appearance, and usage. The rich history of the buildings will be made visible again, combined with the creation of an accessible and contemporary, mixed cultural institution. Here, the functions of the library and the center for cultural education will complement and strengthen each other. The design, by Korteknie Stuhlmacher Architecten, is based on the restoration of all visible exterior parts, with maximum preservation of historical materials such as wooden frames and masonry.
