Right in the center of Tilburg, on Heuvelstraat, lies the iconic former V&D building. With a roof area of about 2,000 m², it is potentially a wonderful place for a roof garden.
In an initial period of several years, Rooftop Rumour has developed a concept called Moes! A place from a publicly accessible roof terrace overlooking the city with some distinctive views of the skyline of Tilburg. Combined with a roof garden and market store where own products and local products are sold and a rooftop café that works mainly from its own garden, ecological and with a local assortment.
Stevens Van Dijck was involved in the process and sometimes in the content to take the plan of Daktuin Moes! from concept to completion. Took part in the design team as construction coach of roof garden Moes! and coached the clients through the steps of construction project management.
Unique to the city and essential to sustainable ambitions such as climate adaptation, the garden and kitchen garden will retain rainwater through a water retention system, insulate the roof and promote biodiversity. It will also contribute to variety and beautification in the landscape of gray roofs in the downtown area. Daktuin Moes! aims for profitability with the goal of using the profit generated to further increase our intended impact. Business operations will be based on the principles of a social enterprise to match.
The plan was made possible in part by some participants, crowdfunding and grants. This gave the project its own momentum.
With the completion of the final design, Daktuin Moes was able to submit the environmental permit. The landlord was not in favor of this during another procedure in Tilburg. During a year several interventions were made by Daktuin Moes to get the landlord and the municipality of Tilburg to change their minds. In vain, as a result Daktuin Moes decided in December 2023 to no longer sit in the waiting room and terminate the initiative. A potential pearl for the city of Tilburg is thus lost.
Daktuin Moes is happy to share its knowledge and experiences, including designs, at www.daktuinmoes.nl.
