ROC TOP Slotervaart

Development

The former Slotervaart hospital in Amsterdam is no longer in use as a hospital. The current owner has redeveloped the iconic building into a Center for Care and intends to provide housing to organizations active at the intersection of healthcare, housing, education, entrepreneurship, creation, inspiration, and innovation through rental to market parties.
ROC TOP will be leasing a total of approximately 5,000 m2 GFA on the 5th and 6th floors of the building. These floors will undergo renovation and furnishing from January to July 2023 and will be used as a new education center for ROC TOP Health & Sport starting from the academic year 2023/2024.
The renovation of the exterior and interior of the main building and the remodeling of the ROC TOP floors will take place simultaneously. This simultaneous construction by the landlord’s contractors and ROC TOP’s contractors requires careful planning and coordination of the works to be carried out.
Twijnstra Gudde represents ROC TOP in this matter. In this capacity, Twijnstra Gudde has commissioned Stevens Van Dijck to provide project management for the renovation of the 5th and 6th floors into the new education center for ROC TOP Health & Sport Stevens Van Dijck, as the project manager, has overseen compliance with the construction contract and monitored the planning and progress of the execution process, promoting it where possible.

Building function

After the renovation, floors 5 and 6 will be set up as an education center for ROC TOP Health & Sport.
ROC TOP aims to bring together all the healthcare and welfare courses it provides in one education center.
The education center will have several large and smaller classrooms. The new center will also have various teaching and practice spaces where students can apply their learned knowledge and skills in simulated practical situations. Additionally, the education center will provide ample space for meetings, studying, lesson preparation, and administration for students and staff of ROC TOP Health & Sport.
The entrance and reception of the new education center are located on the 5th floor of the main building. The entrance can be accessed from the ground floor through the centrally located elevators and staircase in the core of the main building.
Furthermore, floors 5 and 6 are interconnected with a newly constructed central staircase.

Details

The complexity of the project is related to multiple factors.
The first challenge is the simultaneous execution of the renovation of the main building commissioned by CvZ and the reconfiguration of floors 5 and 6 for the new education center for ROC TOP Health & Sport.
Another challenge was the design and implementation of fire safety provisions in CvZ’s main building, including various installation adjustments and additions for the new education center.
Creating a staircase opening of approximately 5 x 5 m2 in the concrete floor of the core on the 6th floor was also complex. This complexity is not only linked to structural measures related to the stairwell and the new staircase construction but also to the transportation of equipment and demolition materials across the construction area of other contractors in the main building.
Twijnstra Gudde and Stevens Van Dijck have laid the foundation for the successful realization and delivery of the new education center for ROC TOP Health & Sport through extensive discussions and careful coordination of the works of CvZ and ROC TOP’s contractors.
