Echo educational building TU Delft

Development

The new Echo building is a multipurpose, interfaculty education building with space for lectures, classroom instruction, group work, project-based learning, debates and self-study. At the same time, it serves as a platform for social interaction, reflection and inspiration. 8,844 sq. ft. of additional space became available with the completion of Building Echo. An asset to TU Delft.
Stevens Van Dijck provided construction management and project management on behalf of the client. Echo was completed in April 2022 and festively opened in May.

Building function

TU Delft has an ambitious sustainability ambition and ECHO certainly contributes to it. More than 1,200 solar panels, full LED lighting, an ingenious ventilation principle, very high insulation and a heat/cold storage system make the building supply energy. Here we have taken into account very long opening hours and not only the energy consumption of the building but also of the users. In addition, in the context of circularity, much attention has been paid to using materials that can be reused elsewhere after the life of the building.

Architectural firm UNStudio created a stylish four-story design. Robust and open. Flexible. An attractive place to meet. Not only inside: the entire area around the building has also been transformed with lots of greenery, parks and water. The underground bicycle storage in the basement also contributes to a pleasant and orderly environment.

Details

The construction of Echo and the area development around it are in line with the campus strategy: to create a campus that, with its buildings, facilities and the filling of public spaces, contributes to maintaining and further growing TU Delft’s top position in the world rankings.

The video below shows an interview with the project managers involved and the client of this project.
Stevens Van Dijck provided project management on behalf of the client during the design and construction phases, as well as construction cost management and project management. Stevens Van Dijck’s project manager was involved in selecting the architect and consultants (total engineer) and directed the design team during all phases of the design process. Also in the construction preparation, execution and aftercare phases of ECHO, Stevens Van Dijck, in close cooperation with the TU Delft project manager, took care of project management, executive management and directed daily supervision.
