From closed bastion to open and sustainable icon

After nearly five years of renovation, the headquarters of De Nederlandsche Bank at Frederiksplein in Amsterdam was festively reopened earlier this year.

In this video, Maaike van Leuken, Director of Operations at DNB, takes you through the highlights of this remarkable project. The DNB office now offers a thoroughly modern working environment, with transparency, sustainability, and circularity taking center stage.

Mecanoo has succeeded in reviving the philosophy of the original architect, Marius Duintjer. Transparency and connection with society are made tangible through the publicly accessible ground floor, patio, and even the former gold vault. Here, the public can explore the world of money and the role of DNB through an immersive experience.

Some key facts:

  • 70,000 tons of material saved by opting for renovation instead of new construction.

  • 50% reduction in environmental impact.

  • 80% reduction in energy consumption and CO₂ emissions.

Stevens Van Dijck, together with partner LSA, was responsible for project management.

In short: a project where history, sustainability, and social value come together—one we look back on with pride.

Take a look at the result!
