Radboudumc has commissioned two buildings: the renovated Research Tower – including its new entrance – and the new Central Sterilization Department and Central Scope Disinfection unit (CSA/CSD). On behalf of the Executive Board, Jan Smit and Lot Winkel performed the official opening ceremony. They were handed the scissors by a robot that facilitates transport within the new CSA. Stevens Van Dijck provided integrated project management for the CSA/CSD project and the redesigned entrance of the Research building. Marieke Smit led the project from the program of requirements through to completion.
Two projects, one campus
Building on an active hospital campus requires a specific approach. Care processes continue uninterrupted, schedules shift, and every decision has a direct impact on the people working there. Marieke ensured alignment between user processes, user needs, technical requirements and feasibility. By explicitly addressing trade-offs at an early stage, space was created for both innovation and control.
Research Tower: 27 years on
After 27 years of intensive use, the Research Tower has been renovated and adapted to meet the demands of modern research. Radboudumc itself was responsible for the renovation project management. Stevens Van Dijck was responsible for redesigning the entrance: the link connecting the outdoor plaza, the underground CSA/CSD and the tower. The completely renewed entrance matches the building and the square in terms of appearance and serves as a prominent gateway to the research area on campus. At this location, three separate projects came together, each with its own clients, conditions and timelines. Marieke maintained oversight and ensured coherence throughout.
CSA/CSD: designed for continuity
The building housing the Central Sterilization Department and Central Scope Disinfection unit (CSA/CSD) is the silent engine of the hospital. Medical instruments are cleaned, sterilized and released here, day in, day out. Reliability and predictability are not preferences—they are essential conditions.
The department was developed in close collaboration with supply chain partners and aligns with national and international developments in the field. In the coming period, final optimizations will be carried out, with the ambition to confidently state that this is the most innovative CSA/CSD in the Netherlands.
