NN Workspace 2020 The Hague and Rotterdam

Development

Two office locations of Nationale Nederlanden (NN), Haagse Poort in The Hague and Delftse Poort in Rotterdam, have undergone major renovations. Healthy, smart and sustainable workplaces have been provided. Space for agile working, scrum and more creative, innovative workspaces. Better lighting, encouragement of pedal use. Interaction, openness. Exactly how NN envisioned the new layout of its offices to enhance employee job satisfaction.
Stevens Van Dijck assisted NN in the design and construction process at both sites as external project manager. A total of 24 floors were renovated in phases in a construction team. Impressive is the role of sustainability in this project. The three main pillars are therefore 100% circular, Zero Waste and achieving a WELL V2 Platinum label.
Preparations for the renovations began in October 2019. The floors were completed in phases. Final completion will take place in 2022.

Building function

NN acts fully in accordance with the 100% circular idea where existing materials are reused as much as possible (possibly after modification). This is supplemented by circular materials from the second-hand market. New uses are sought for released materials according to the Zero Waste principle. For example, an old bookcase transforms into a call box and residual materials are shared between plots as raw materials.
Circularity and Zero Waste apply not only to everything that leaves the building, but also to everything that is added. That means no more demolition but harvesting and no more linear design but design based on what is available, or in other words reverse design with a large role for the MKI (Environmental Cost Indicator).
As if that were not enough, the ambition is also to achieve Well V2 Platinum certification. NN clearly attaches great importance to the well-being of its employees. A wonderful feature.

Details

NN’s workplace strategy is based on research into how NN employees think they will work after the pandemic. Although implementation was already in full swing, this led to a different allocation and use of square footage, aimed at even better cooperation for now and in the future. This approach has not gone unnoticed, which is why it was awarded the JLL Winning Workplace Award 2021.
