The Nijkleaster Foundation wants to form a new monastery (nijkleaster) near the village of Hijlaard in Friesland. The objective is to create a place where people can quietly retreat to reflect and catch their breath. At the same time, it is a place where people meet in liturgy and conversation, silence and walking.
Stevens Van Dijck, as project manager and executive director, is assisting the foundation in the feasibility phase with the preparation of a program of requirements and budget estimate, the design process, organizes the tender and provides implementation supervision.
Construction began in December 2021. The monastery will be inaugurated in 2023.
The monumental farmhouse will be restored and adapted to its new use. In addition, 3 apartments for permanent residence and 9 rooms for guests will be built.
Nijkleaster seeks new ways for faith and spirituality. The church of Jorwert is the base for this search. The Westerhûs convent complex (just outside Jorwert) is currently being developed into a place where permanent residents (kleasterlingen) pray and work, live and offer hospitality.
