Msgr. Frencken College Oosterhout

Development

The Msgr. Frencken College is a school for secondary education with the profiles havo and vwo. The current building no longer met the requirements. The oldest portions date from the 1960s. After that, several more expansions took place.

Stevens Van Dijck conducted the feasibility study and organized the tendering process with the Oosterhout municipality. In addition, Stevens Van Dijck was responsible for contract management and quality control.

Building function

Based on a feasibility study, it was decided to maintain the newer portions of the school and demolish the older portions and replace them with new construction. Relevant questions were whether the combination of existing portions and new construction could create a coherent building. And whether a clever structure would allow the current school to remain in use during the construction period to avoid the expense and inconvenience of temporary housing. It turned out to be possible.

Details

Due to asbestos issues and a phased construction with only two makeshift classrooms, the challenge was to not interfere with the existing school but to continue construction smoothly and thoroughly. Through very intensive and constructive cooperation, this worked out well.
The building sections to be retained were brought fully up to new construction standards and thus seamlessly merged with the new building. The sustainable building has triple-glass, PV panels, Fresh Schools B indoor climate and is multifunctional with two auditoriums, auditorium and a combined sports hall. Almost all of the fences around the school have been replaced with water features, hills and new greenery so that the school is much more compatible with the adjacent Lukwel Park.
