LocHal Tilburg

Development

Between 1868 and 2011, it was an NS workshop (known to generations of Tilburgers as “d’n Ateljee”) where locomotives and trains were tinkered with. Now the huge industrial building is the centerpiece of a major redevelopment project in the so-called railroad zone: the LocHal. The LocHal is a new world-class urban living room for Tilburg in an iconic former locomotive shed of the Dutch Railways. The building now houses the Central Brabant Library, arts organization Kunstloc, meeting and co-working venue Seats2Meet and restaurants, among others. With space for business, living, learning, inspiring and meeting, the LocHal is once again in use as a workplace in the 21st century. The industrial character of the building was preserved in the redevelopment of the shell.

We supported concept development, drafted the program of requirements and were responsible for design management, contract management and quality assurance during implementation. The project was tendered in the form of a design & build contract. The renovation began in May 2017. Completion was in November 2018 and the LocHal was open to the public in January 2019.

Building function

The exterior of the building has been restored to the old style. A lot of history is also visible inside: the LocHal still contains the rails where locomotives were parked for maintenance. The overhead cranes and steam and power lines and the imposing, weathered steel structure are also silent witnesses to the building’s original function. In the LocHal, an ascending staircase landscape created enough floor space for people to sit, while the monumental hall still appears as spacious as ever. On the top floor on the south side, the StadsBalkon offers a fantastic view of Tilburg. The Glass Hall, formerly the music hall in the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam, has been rebuilt in the LocHal to accommodate conferences and events.

Details

The LocHal has won several prestigious awards including: The Best Library of the Netherlands 2020, World Building of the Year, Dutch Design Awards 2019 (Habitat category), BNA Best Building 2019 (category winner Livability & Social Cohesion and winner Audience Award), NRP Gulden Feniks 2019 (Small projects category).
