KOZ Máximaal – Rotterdam

Development

On the border of the Hillegersberg and Schiebroek districts, the municipality has developed the KOZ complex. The Sint Mattheus School, Pameijer Foundation, and BijDeHand Childcare offer a protected learning and working environment for children and young people with intellectual disabilities aged 0-20.

Stevens Van Dijck organized the user coordination, led the design and realization process as a construction manager, and as a manager was challenged by the unique design: no angle in the building is straight, the wooden facade has different colors and rhythms, and various (user) facilities were carried out by third parties.

Building function

A clear building structure has been chosen that provides children with clarity and the necessary safety. The layout is like a 3-lobed leaf, so that the different users can recognize themselves within their own lobe, but also find peace in the deeper points of their domains. The heart of the building is located between the 3 lobes. This open space has been created for gatherings. All classrooms, both inside the building and from the garden, are visible and provide inspiration for staff, students, parents, and visitors.

Details

Stevens Van Dijck has been involved in the project as a project manager since the definition phase. First as a design manager, to work together with the client, users, and the design team and find the most optimal design solutions within the given constraints. And that for the special target group where not only functionality is crucial, but also the experience of the environment. Atmospheric, warm, secure, sometimes inspiring and sometimes low-stimulus. Those are also processes in which Stevens Van Dijck feels comfortable: building with and for the users.
