Gorlaeus building Leiden University

Development

Leiden University’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is getting a new building, the Gorlaeus Building. The extensive new construction project was cut into three phases. This involves connecting new construction with the old buildings that will be demolished in phases. After all, teaching and research must continue unhindered during construction. The first part of the new building with 45,000 m² GLA has now been completed and put into use. This includes a central main axis with three short side wings and one long wing. There is also a large atrium, the meeting place for faculty, students and visitors. The building contains advanced facilities for scientific education and research. Phase 1 of new construction ran from 2013 to 2016. Another 30,000 sq. ft. of GLA is currently being realized in phase 2a and is expected to be completed in 2023. In this, Stevens Van Dijck is responsible for executive management and quality management and is supervising the pursuit of BREEAM certification.

Building function

At phase 2a, the central main axis will have a main entrance at the new Campus Square and three more side wings. There is room for laboratories, offices, teaching rooms, meeting rooms and a large number of self-study spaces. The communal facilities, such as the library and restaurant, will also be built during this phase. By 2024, it could be in use. Phase 2b will be followed by an additional wing with offices and laboratories.

Details

The entire Gorlaeus Building will be built sustainably. Important sustainable measures being applied include a thermal energy storage system, 1,150 square meters of solar panels, triple glazing and facade, roof and floor with high insulation values to reduce heat loss and increase energy efficiency. The ambition is to achieve the BREEAM Very Good label.
