The municipality of Bladel has decided to revitalize its Community House Den Herd. After a thorough exploration and research phase, the decision was made to leave the current, outdated location behind and move to a new site. The former Rabobank building at Emmaplein in Bladel, purchased by the municipality, offers ideal possibilities to accommodate the various cultural and social functions of Den Herd. This location not only meets the technical requirements and wishes of Den Herd but also provides the opportunity for the municipality to achieve its sustainability ambitions. Additionally, materials are being reused wherever possible following a circular approach.
Stevens Van Dijck is involved in the redevelopment of the building as project manager, supporting and representing the municipality during both the construction preparation and execution phases.
To transform the building from a bank office into a community center that will be functional and inviting for the next 30 years, and to facilitate connection, adjustments are necessary. In collaboration with architectural firm Group A, engineering firm ABT, and the board of Den Herd, intensive work was carried out in 2021 to create a beautiful design. This design provides space for all associations using the Community House at the Market, including a theater hall, several multipurpose halls, workshop and club rooms, and the library. The addition of stairs and atriums creates a clear structure where sightlines and natural light ensure connection and orientation. The Community House at the Market will be used flexibly by various parties but can also serve as one large venue for major events such as carnival or a celebration on the balcony.
An essential element in the design by architectural firm Group A is the ‘connector’: a public route and spatial experience that promotes the desired internal and external connection with the Market. Users and visitors encounter each other in the ‘connector’, which contributes to meeting, interaction, dynamics, social safety, and a strong collective feeling. Notable in the design is also the new open facade on the market side, offering a view of the activities and encounters taking place there. This creates a seamless connection between old and new, above and below, and inside and outside. This new facade serves as a recognizable symbol on the square and marks the entrance to the Community House at the Market.
