A new movie theater has been built on the Kerkplein in Arnhem: the Focus Filmtheater. The movie theater was realized for Focus Filmtheater Arnhem Foundation. This foundation aims to stimulate interest in film and visual culture among as wide and diverse an audience as possible. Stevens Van Dijck, along with ABT and DP6 architectural studio, were part of the engineering team. Together, we were responsible for fully developing the design into a final design+ (DO+). Stevens Van Dijck fulfilled the role of project/design manager within the engineering team. After selection/award to the E&C contractor, we were responsible for process and quality monitoring. The theater was completed in March 2018.
The theater consists of five movie theaters with a total of 400 seats, a foyer and a movie café. With the new building, the foundation has added two rooms compared to the old situation. In addition to space for films, the movie theater now offers space for exhibition and lectures. With the new building, the choice was made to expand the catering area with a cozy movie café and professional catering kitchen.
The Focus Film Theater is located next to the striking Eusebius Church, a church building that defines the cityscape of Arnhem. Before the war, the site of the new Focus Film Theater was an alley: the Torensteeg. Architect DP6 brought back the historic Tower Lane as a structuring element in the design. This “New Tower Lane” will ensure that the view of the Eusebius is preserved. Another nice feature of the design are the masonry facades that feature typical Arnhem ornamentation: diagonal lines and circular rollers around the round windows. The building thus fits perfectly into the urban structure. The Focus Film Theater won the 2020 Heuvelink Prize for “the best new construction project in Arnhem.
