At the edge of the center of Den Burg on Texel, a new social and cultural hub is emerging: the Thijssehuis. This remarkable building will serve as the home for Artex Art School, KopGroep Libraries, and youth organization Y4E, while also housing Radio Texel. These organizations strongly believe in the synergy that arises from a shared, inspiring space.
The Thijssehuis is designed with a three-bay wooden truss construction that perfectly reflects the island’s atmosphere. The building exudes openness and hospitality, acting as a connecting place for the community. Natural materials and softly “sun-bleached” colors have been used, contributing to its authentic Texel charm.
Located exactly where the old Thijsseschool stood, this new cultural center proudly bears the name of Jac. P. Thijsse, a writer, teacher, and nature conservationist. His love for Texel is reflected in the values and identity of the Thijssehuis.
The Thijssehuis is more than just a building; it is a place where the identity and culture of the Texelaars are expressed. It symbolizes the strong connection of the island residents, the rich natural and cultural landscapes, the tranquility and space, and the entrepreneurship that characterizes Texel. The Thijssehuis addresses various social needs. In addition to education, a library, and a home base for youth, it offers a theater hall, an exhibition space, and a community center function. The three institutions aim to further strengthen the social component of cultural participation and connect the public and culture in all its aspects. The close collaboration of the organizations and the building’s design, which is tailored to this cooperation, provide opportunities for versatile use such as events and conferences.
The construction of the Thijssehuis, designed by DP6, has now started. This new social and cultural hub of the Wadden Island is sustainably built using primarily biobased materials. Notable features include the wooden structure, wooden roofs, and bamboo slat sunshades on the upper floor. Except for the foundation, upper floor, and plinth facade, all parts of the building are made of wood.
The three roofs are intersected by two skylights running the entire length of the building. The floor plan’s division gives each space one and a half roofs, creating a sense of spaciousness and lightness. The roofs rest on a traditional wooden structure, giving the interior a friendly, barn-like appearance.
